밴쿠버 서점 추천, a bookstore to go in Vancouver

Indigo, Chapters, Coles 등의 덩치는 크지만 개성은 그다지 느껴지지 않는 체인 서점 말고, 작지만 쾌적하고 개성이 있는 서점에 가고싶었다. 서울 광화문 교보문고는 커도 개성이 있는데, 내가 외국인이어서 그런 건지 몰라도 밴쿠버의 대형 체인 서점들은 그나물에 그밥처럼 보인다. 책 외의 상품을 많이 팔고, 막상 책을 사고 싶은 마음이 들도록 책을 진열하지는 않는다. 그냥 책이 많을 뿐이다. 밴쿠버의 서점을 검색하면 주로 다운타운의 중고서적을 파는 서점들이 결과로 잡힌다. 중고서적을 좋아하지만 코로나 바이러스로 고생하고 있는 때인만큼 남이 보던 책은 보고 싶지 않았기 때문에, 이런 결과는 내게 그다지 도움이 되지 않았다. 그러다 오늘 East Vancouver에서 돌아다니던 중에 마음에 드는 서점을 발견했다. 서점 이름은 'Book Warehouse Main St.'이다. 위치는 4118 Main St.이다. 

I didn't find Indigo, Chapters, or Coles very attractive and wanted to find a new bookstore to go. Kyobo Bookstore in a Gwanghamun area, Seoul, South Korea is even bigger than Indigo, Chapters, or Coles and attracts so many people with its own charm. As a foreinger living in Metro Vancouver, Indigo, Chapters, and Coles feel dull and boring although they are the biggest bookstores in this city. Most of all, I feel like they don't bother to display books in a way that they encourage customers to buy them. They just have many books. When you google for bookstore in Vancouver, the result will only show you secondhand bookstores most of the times. I do like secondhand books, but I have been avoiding them because of the Corona virus. But then I ran into this bookstore called Book Warehouse Main St. when I was walking around in East Vancouver. It's located at 4118 Main St. 

 

입구의 현수막을 보니 온라인에서 주문한 다음 서점에서 픽업할 수 있는 시스템이 구축되어 있었다. 코로나 바이러스로 인한 팬데믹이 시작된 이후로 많은 자영업자들이 이런 시스템을 만들어 왔다. 온라인 주문은 아래 링크에서 가능하다. 가장 먼저 내 눈을 사로잡은 건 입구쪽에 배치된 Let's talk about... 섹션이었다. 동성애, 인종, 환경, 여성, 평등, 난민 등의 이슈에 관한 아동 도서들이 자리잡고 있었다. 아이들을 다양한 사람들에 대해 이해하고 자신의 의견을 표현할 수 있는 사람으로 기르는 일은 중요하다고 생각하고, 이런 책들이 도움이 되리란 것도 알고 있다. 다만 이 책들 중 하나를 펼쳐보다가 좀 거부감이 들기는 했다. 아기가 등장하는 걸로 봐서 아기용 책 같았는데 아기의 주먹에 대해 말하면서 하늘 높이 들어 본인의 주장을 자신있게 펼치란 말이 나오니, 이게 아기용 책이 맞나 하는 생각이 들었다. 내가 고리타분하거나 무지한 사람인지도 모르겠다. 이런 책을 아기들에게 어떻게 읽혀야 하는지 상상이 잘 안된다.

The banner at the entrance tells you that you can order their books online and pick them up at the stosre. Since the pandemic started, many local businesses have set up this kind of system. You can order their books online on the website linked to bookwarehouse.ca. The first thing that caught my eyes was the section called Let's talk about. I saw books for children that help them undrestand different ideas like races, sexuality, refugess, and environment conservation. I also found some books that encourage children to speak out. I believe that these books are educational. I picked up a book from the section and read first few pages and had a hard time figuring out hwo to read it to babies. Apparently the book has a picture of a baby on its first page and the text was about speaking out with one's fist up. I just couldn't imagine how people could think of that from a baby's fist. I felt stupid.

 

 

그 다음으로 한참 들여다 본 곳은 Mr. Men 시리즈 진열대였다. 나는 처음 보는 시리즈였지만, 알고보니 수십년 된 시리즈였다. 각 권이 한 캐릭터의 스토리이고, 제목이 Mr. Mean처럼 해당 캐릭터의 성격을 분명하게 말해준다. 각 권마다 주인공 스토리는 정해져있지만, 각 스토리 내에서 다른 캐릭터들과의 상호작용이 있다. 시리즈 구성이 마음에 들었고, 우리 반 아이들의 성격에 해당하는 책들을 사고 싶다는 충동이 강하게 일었으나 집이 좁아서 꾹 참았다. 다음 달에 있는 발렌타인 데이를 겨냥한 아동 그림책을 모아놓은 섹션도 마음에 들었다. 밴쿠버의 어린이집에서는 발렌타인 데이 무렵에 사랑과 친절에 대한 그림책들을 많이 읽어준다. 그렇다보니 이런 큐레이션도 마음에 쏙 들었다. 가격도 합리적이고 내용도 괜찮아서 사고 싶은 책들이 좀 있었지만, 역시나 꾹 참았다.

Then I stopped at the Mr. Men section. I saw the decades-old series for the first time in my life. I liked the idea of making the series up with stories that introduce different characters and their dominant personality traits. Some of the titles reminded me of some of the children I have in my class, and I thought about buying them after moving to a bigger place. I also liked the section for books about love or kindness for children in anticipatoin of St. Valentine's Day. As an early childhood educator, I really wanted to buy some books from here becuase the prices were reasonable and the books were good enough. I would have ended up buying a few if I lived in a bigger place. 

 

운좋게도 이 시국에 딱 맞는 제목의 책도 발견했다. 내용이 궁금해서 살펴봤더니, 사람들이 마스크를 쓰는 다양한 상황에 대해 설명하고 있었다. 위험한 물질을 다루거나 위험한 상황에 노출이 될 수 있는 경우의 사람들에 대한 설명 등이 다양하고 구체적으로 담겨있어 3-5세 반 아이들에게 읽히면 좋을 것 같았다. 스태프가 선정한 책들을 모아놓은 섹션은 도서관이나 서점에서 내가 가장 좋아하는 섹션이다. 특히 사진에서처럼 손글씨로 정성스럽게 소감을 적어놓으면 책에 더 한층 매력을 느낀다. 온라인 서점에서 컴퓨터 화면으로 리뷰를 읽는 것보다 더 큰 파급력을 내게 미친다. 이 외에도 비싸지 않으면서 예쁜 카드도 팔고 있었다. 전반적으로 시각적으로 부담되지 않으면서 어필할 수 있게 책을 진열한 서점이었다. 공간이 작은데도 불구하고 큐레이팅과 시각적 미를 놓치지 않은 공간이라 구경하는 내내 기분이 좋았다.

Luckily I found a book that is just right for this time. This book shows different situations where people have to wear masks for safety like labs and construction sites. I think this book is just right for 3-5 classes. I like the staff pick section best in both libraries and bookstores. Especially when the staff write down their reviews and put them with the books, I like the books more than I do when I read the reviews online. They also sell pretty cards with reasonable prices. I liked this bookstore mostly because they seemed to konw how to make the most of their modest size of space. With their way of arranging books, they cleary show you who they are and please you at the same time.
